In the first season, they wanted to be an equivalent to American Idol, using open call auditions to bring new performers to prominence. The problem is that a new comic doing open mike nights needs five minutes of material that works, a feature comic needs twenty minutes, and a headliner needs an hour. By looking for new people, they got many who had,at best, five minutes of material that worked, and if they proceeded to the next round, they had nothing new to present. They dealt with that by bringing experienced comics in but then they had the problem that the judges and contestants knew each other from working on the road and that created an awkward tension.
