FWIW, Patton Oswalt and Jay Mohr (who was involved in the program for a good
chunk of the first years) had a discussion about the program during a recent
podcast.  Probably of interest only for those deeply interested in the program.

Subject: [TV orNotTV] The changes coming to Last Comic Standing

It was noted here before that NBC has picked up a new season of Last Comic
Standing with Wanda Sykes's production company running the show. This article
talks about how they plan on dealing with the weaknesses of the earlier version:

http://www.laughspin.com/2014/01/17/drastic-changes-coming-to-last-comic-standing-on-nbc-exclusive/

I never watched the show, but I have heard many contestants and judges talk
about their experiences on Marc Maron's podcast. In the first season, they
wanted to be an equivalent to American Idol, using open call auditions to bring
new performers to prominence. The problem is that a new comic doing open mike
nights needs five minutes of material that works, a feature comic needs twenty
minutes, and a headliner needs an hour. By looking for new people, they got
many who had,at best, five minutes of material that worked, and if they
proceeded to the next round, they had nothing new to present. They dealt with
that by bringing experienced comics in but then they had the problem that the
judges and contestants knew each other from working on the road and that
created an awkward tension.

The new season won't have open call auditions, and, as the article puts it, it
will be more like The Voice than Survivor.
