They still have Disney (public not allowed -- fairly certain they have a shoot-to-kill mandate for anyone on the lot not connected to the industry) and a few cable nets like Cartoon Network operate offices in the area. Former PBS station KCET sold off its historic Hollywood studios a while back and now operates inside the office building built on the ruins of what was NBC's Catalina building (where Tom Snyder did his CNBC talk show). What has really gone away in Burbank are the support services for media... script duplication, equipment rental, prop houses... all the ones I used to work with liquidated assets years ago. Warner Bros survives only because it functions almost entirely in-house (it's a point of pride for them, as it was at NBC back in the day). Note to any WB personnel looking to avoid NBC's fate: If somebody within the studio decides to subcontract things like set construction, that studio's days are numbered. Keep proving you can do it all without having to recruit from the valley or Hollywood proper and you'll stay rooted in Burbank. Farm out even a tiny portion of what you do, and that'll be that. > > I wonder what it will look like in 2018 or 2019 now. > > > > > On 2014-01-31 10:09 PM, Kevin M. wrote: > > More bad news for Beautiful Downtown Burbank > > Today is the last day NBC (and O&O KNBC) will operate any newsgathering > operations from its former Burbank studios (now unimaginitively renamed The > Burbank Studios).
