I do not really monitor Twitter, but reading about the reaction this morning is rather dismaying. I think that MM could have done with fill in the historically impaired a little bit more than just the scripted Vertigo reference with just who she was, and that she was 81 years old. This I guess is one problem with the obsession with artificial physical beauty - all that plastic surgery not only makes her look unrecognizable, but also does disguise her true age. Even in this god forsaken era one would hope that if most people knew how old she was they would have been delighted to see her up and about, rather than bashing her diction.
On other Oscar matters, my DVR said that the show was supposed to go from 5:30 to 8:30 (PT). It ended at 9:00, but without hardly any comment about running late (other than one fairly typical gag from Ellen), and I noticed that the Kimmell show started as scheduled. Was my DVR in error, and the show always scheduled to go 3.5 hours, or did it really go over 30 minutes? I thought Ellen was unusually low-energy, and that her timing was off, and a lot of that Schtick in the audience seemed to go on forever. I suspect they could have made up most of the 30 minutes just by reigning that in a bit (though yes I did hear the Twitter people were very excited about that picture). OTOH, I don't mind the Oscars going over, and prefer that, with a little more tolerance for going long on speeches and a bit of spontaneity here and there, to a tight ship that constricts the show. Even with Ellen's low energy I enjoyed the night, and while there were few surprises (I went 21 for 24) I thought most of the winners deserving in what was a good year for movies.
