On the Gulf Coast generally and in New Orleans specifically, enjoy the
food. You can use a travel guide or ask around for small local seafood
shacks for local flavor. New Orleans has both top quality fine dining
restaurants and smaller, less pretentious places. There are two main types
of cuisine native to Louisiana, Creole, which is Caribbean and African
derived and is spicy, and Cajun, which comes from French exiles and is
hearty soups and stews. The locals appreciate it if you don't think the two
terms are interchangeable.

New Orleans prides itself on its quirky people and customs. Keep an eye out
for voodoo and witchcraft and odd art galleries.

On any given night New Orleans has some of the best live music playing in
the country. There will be shows playing all over the city with rock, jazz,
funk, and zydeco bands. Unlike a bigger city like New York, getting in to
hear the music isn't expensive. You can stop by Preservation Hall and spend
a few minutes listening to traditional Dixieland jazz, but don't take that
to be the ultimate music experience you can have in New Orleans.

I had a recent visit from a friend who attended Tulane University in New
Orleans in the early '80s and recently took his son there to see if the son
was interested in the university. He told me that New Orleans has undergone
a drastic change for the better in the last 30 years.
