I'm pretty sure that his last appearance on the Late Show was a guest
hosting appearance in 2000, not long after his final HBO special. I seem to
recall that he bombed pretty badly that night.

And he never appeared on Leno's Tonight Show. I suspect that was because
David and Joan Rivers were touring partners when Jay took over, and Jay
famously never had Joan on (because of Joan's feud with Debbie Vickers -
not because of Jay's loyalty to Johnny, as has often been charged).

My friend Michael Dale wrote this on his Facebook status last night: "To
honor the passing of the great David Brenner, I'm going to ride the subway
tomorrow sitting on a newspaper opened to his obituary. Then, after a
minute, I'll get up, turn the page, and sit back down on it."
