I wasn't that thrilled with the show that Drew did. It does go back to that
period of shows done after Kilborn left and Ferguson was chosen. While
Craig Kilborn was a serviceable host, he ended up needing to bring his
producer and writers on screen to make comedy work. He didn't make a real
imprint on the show as host and his writers could work with that format and
a series of new hosts and keep the show going.

Craig Ferguson, on the other hand, has been there 10 years and has really
imprinted his personality on the show. He has a smaller staff of writers
who work with his style of monologue and he uses improv chops to do bits
like the cold open and the tweets/emails. It would be difficult for any
newcomer to take that stage and take it over. So my criticism of Drew isn't
that he failed at doing Craig's show well, because that is just too high an
expectation for one night.

I was hoping that Drew's monologue would be more like Drew Carey standup
that just going through a list of topical jokes. Since Drew is no longer
doing standup even that might have been too much to hope for. My feeling
with Drew is that he just wanted to get through the show. When Craig hosted
TPIR I'm sure he figured that the vast majority of people watching did not
know who he was or the style of comedy he does. But I thought he and Josh
did enough to bring his spirit to TPIR without going too inside.
