It was more "The Glorious Cause" and less "Killer Angeles". I am not familiar with the book it is based on, so can not tell if it is being faithful to its source in terms of complexity and quality. It is frustrating that AMC went to all the trouble to make a historical spy series, and then seemed to lean over backwards to reassure the audience that there would not be that much history or espionage in it, instead overdosing on the melodrama. The first episode played less like a quality AMC show and more like it was made for USA. My mean-spirited and unjustified suspicion is that they were hoping the subject matter would attract a bigger audience that doesn't watch Mad Men or Breaking Bad, but does believe that the U.S. is the greatest, best country God has ever given man on the face of the earth, and they did not want to overburden them with too complex a show - at least at first. But I will keep watching it - and hoping it gets better. -- -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
