It's now pretty clear that the avalanche on Everest has been pretty disastrous, with 16 now thought to have died.
The Scottish climber and filmmaker Ed Wardle was on Channel 4 News this evening in a pre-recorded interview. http://www.channel4.com/news/everest-sherpa-guides-killed-avalanche-nepal He was there as part of an NBC production team - Peacock Productions - who are making the Discovery programme. Wardle was also interviewed on Today ealier ( http://www.capitalnewyork.com/article/media/2014/04/8543929/nbc-tv-crew-become-first-responders-everest-avalanche ). In his Channel 4 interview he said that five of the dead were Sherpas working for his team. He also said that his team were due to start climbing but had delayed 24 hours on advice of their Sherpas. I understand that at the start of the "season" Sherpas from all the various teams on Everest join up to fix ropes across places like the Khumbu Icefall (where the avalanche happened) in order for all the teams to be led through as safely as possible. This is what I believe they were doing at the time of the accident. I wouldn't suggest that the nature of any one team's goals would have made a difference. But it seems ludicrous at this point that the Discovery venture should continue. Incidentally, the Discovery website (http://everestjumplive.com/guide.html) really does suggest that the jump would have been made from the summit. The idea that it could ever have been casually slotted into a set time-slot is utterly mad.
