Also, as I once tried to tell a school principal when she insisted I show
the film to middle school students as a reward, it really isn't
family-friendly entertainment.

I'm probably in the minority with my opinions (who am I kidding... I am in
the minority), but if there has to be televised Broadway musicals, and if
they aren't going to use actual Broadway talent, the only way this concept
works is with no-holds-barred stunt-casting. Katy Perry as Sandy, one of
those One Direction kids as Danny, Lady Gaga as Rizzo, another of those One
Direction kids as Kenickie, etc. It still isn't something I'd watch, but if
Fox is just phoning in a musical so they can say they did a musical (kind
of like they did "Greed" just so they could say they had a gameshow like
"Who wants to be a millionaire?"), the least they can do is attach some
names.

To the larger issue, music specials notoriously underperform in the
ratings, and since Fox's primetime is only two hours long, a musical wipes
out an entire evening's programing for the network. A special based on a 35
year old film isn't exactly aimed at a desired demographic for advertisers.
