While netflix has been in the media on net neutrality, etc.... I have
always been a TCP/IP internet geek.
Over a year ago I learned that netflix was promoting some hardware that
would get stored/sync'd data closer to customers at ISP locations - they
called it OpenConnect. If your netflix says "SuperHD" on some content,
then you are close enough (internet hop-wise) to an OpenConnect box.
https://www.netflix.com/openconnect
Netflix will provide a rack-mounted server with 100 TB (terabytes!!!) of
fresh content pre-loaded, plus 1 GB of solid-state-drive (SSD) drives.
I have no idea what the commerical agreement is; but its freaking drooly
wrt hardware.
I just read the deployment guide for it. not too technical (in my
mind, but I'm an geeky engineer that loves TCP/IP stuff :) ).
http://oc.nflxvideo.net/docs/OpenConnect-Deployment-Guide.pdf
long story short - brilliant use of Open Source software (FreeBSD,
nginx, others) for network efficiency; and my teenage kids don't have
any clue how it all works :)
yeah, yeah, I know this isn't the forum for tech stuff. But everyone on
this list loves the content :) . So click a couple of the above links
to appreciate what all the geeks do for you. Reminds me of a joke: my
21-yr old son just graduated from Engineering.... there was a Nursing /
Engineering prom (traditionally) and the MC said "well, all you female
nursing students... if you can't find a real man, then you should find
an Engineer". I like to think that my wife found both.
