Well Viacom can only improve the channel. Under its recent ownership of
Richard Desmond (a man who made his money in pornography), it has made
barely any original programming with the notable exception of Big Brother
which it bought rights to once Channel 4 had decided it was no longer for
them.

Channel 5's saving grace has been the deals a previous ownership did in
securing life-of-series rights to popular imports including the CSI brand.
It also makes quite popular children's programming - second only to the BBC
I suspect.

Viacom already has plenty of localised versions of its big brands in the UK
pay-TV market, so it'll be interesting to see how much they move their
assets around. The other thing that Viacom could get involved in - should
it want to - is sport. Like everywhere else, it's big business in the UK,
but as a free-to-air channel, it would be able to bid for some rights that
pay-TV channels aren't allowed to buy.

Personally, I'd love to see The Daily Show and remaining episodes of The
Colbert Report get promoted onto the channel. But TDS only gets midnight
airings on Comedy Central Extra (a sister channel to the main Comedy
Central channel, and not a channel that airs in HD). And nobody broadcasts
Colbert. (Nor does anyone broadcast Dave. CNBC does air edited versions of
the The Tonight Show just before a live simulcast of the NBC Nightly News.)
