Chairman of the BBC Trust is a different position to Director General. The BBC Trust's remit is to oversee the BBC, make senior appointments and generally make sure they stay on track. They don't have any direct say so over programmes beyond saying if channels are serving their remits etc. It's only a four day a week job (theoretically).
To be honest, I doubt if even a Director General would intervene over the future of a particular show these days unless there had been some kind of major scandal.
