To put it bluntly, almost every movie now wants a PG-13 rating, The MPAA
has effectively turned PG-13 into a defacto R-minus. enabling them to get
away with a boatload of stuff while still enjoying the sweet, sweet teenage
cash. The fact, (as Mr Bowie notes) they don't give a clear delineation
about where these boundaries are (excepting for the absurdity of language
that made Planes, Trains, And Automobiles an R solely because of a single
scene). So films that should really be R rated become PG-13 because of some
minor tweak, which boosts the bottom line tremendously (and gives a false
sense of security to parents).

What I'd like to see (but will never see) is a truly independent board
judge these movies. The legendary story about how Trey Parker and Matt
Stone put all sorts of stuff into the South Park film, only to watch some
of the most vulgar get a pass while milder stuff was redlined, pretty much
showed 15 years ago that the MPAA is a pathetic joke. Nothing's changed
since then.
