As stated in a previous thread on the site, we're in that quiet period
between the summer shows and the fall premieres. But I'm still digging up
stuff to watch.

Enjoying Peter Capaldi's cantankerous incarnation of the Doctor on the new
series of "Doctor Who." Will reserve judgement on the season until it's
further along, but damn, Capaldi is sharp and rat-a-tat-tat funny!

Speaking of DW (and one leggy, red-haired former companion), I cringed at
much of the "Selfie" pilot despite my unabashed love for Karen "Amy Pond"
Gillan who plays the shallow but hot social-media age Eliza. The jokes feel
(forgive me) Insta-dated as soon as they're mouthed. John Cho's brand-wise
21st century Henry Higgins was an unlikely bit of casting in this attempt
to shoehorn modern tropes into a purported update of "Pygmalion" that might
be very tough to sustain.

Saw the pilot for the CW's "The Flash." Not a fan of the "Dawson's
Creek"-ization of DC's superheroes on the CW, but I kinda liked this one.
Good effects and nice support from "Ed" star Tom Cavanagh as a mysterious
scientist/mentor to the Flash and Jesse L. Martin as a staunch but kindly
cop. Also, saw and dug the pilot to "Constantine," NBC's attempt to
serialize the adventures of DC/Vertigo's badass Cockney demonologist /
magus in a more faithful way than that crappy Keanu film adaptation. Not so
sure that "Gotham" -- the li'l Bruce Wayne/young Jim Gordon series on FOX
-- will work as well as "The Flash," with all the 20something and teenage
versions of the villains in Batman's Rogues Gallery showing up. It's not
Batman Babies, but it still put me off. Donal Logue rocks it as Detective
Harvey Bullock though.

If you haven't caught the WW2 atomic-scientists-in-New-Mexico drama
"Manhattan" on WGN, it's worth a look. Really impressed with "The
Honourable Woman," the British geo-political drama/mini-series about one
family's impact on the Israel-Palestine conflict and the personal
repercussions, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, Stephen Rea, Janet McTeer &
Lindsay Duncan.

Otherwise, I've been into the second seasons of "Ray Donovan" and "Masters
of Sex," and loving IFC"s surprisingly funny mock-u-comedy with the
snarky/cute musical duo "Garfunkel & Oates," which is directed by non other
than Fred Savage. But mostly, I'm following the Giants' pennant chase and
eagerly anticipating the Niners-Dallas game.

As ever with all of the above, YMMV.
