I think that there was an interview at some point which people read into meaning that Downton was ending imminently. While I think that they will want to bow out gracefully in the end, it'll probably be determined by the more "..business" considerations of "Showbusiness."
It's very popular and still does great ratings for ITV. It's owned by NBC Universal and last time I checked, they didn't just cancel series because they got bored of them. I suspect that it'll be down to what kind of contracts that they have the lead cast members signed up for, and Fellowes own views, as well as the aforementioned considerations. Then there's always the option of some kind of spin-off series.
