Of course, you're all correct, but there is that dwindling minority that
will complain about anything that doesn't fit with their definition of
public broadcasting. And it seems to be an unavoidable fact of life for
both radio and television in this country and elsewhere. Last week, NPR
celebrated "Morning Edition"'s 35th anniversary. "ME" has more listeners
today than ever, but the comments on the articles commemorating the
anniversary seemed to be overwhelmingly whining about how bad Steve
Inskeep, Renee Montagne and David Greene are and wishing Bob Edwards was
still on (and I suspect those who know that Edwards was fired by Sirius XM
some weeks ago wish he would come back--although I don't think he ever
wants to get up five mornings a week at 1:30 a.m. ever again). Oh yes, and
complaining about how NPR has become fluffy and Republican (even if the
teabaggers are still calling the network a bunch of Commies and "All Things
Considered" was much more back-of-the-book in the 70s than it is today),
even saying that it's the same as the network morning shows. If some of
these people ever bothered comparing a "Today" or :"GMA" rundown to an "ME"
rundown, they'd be shocked how little hard news are on the network TV
morning shows these days and how much more hard news is on "ME."
