That's no surprise. When the 11:30 people own the 12:30 show, they tend to make sure the shows are distinct (and that 12:30 is cheaper). Carson did it when Letterman went on, with limits on the number of bandmembers and the length of the monologue. When Dave went to CBS, Snyder was, of course, a different kind of show, and both Craigs started with nobody else on stage. Conan and Fallon, who didn't have to deal with that kind of control, had onstage announcer/sidekicks and full bands to work with.
