I think you will love this trip (I am biased of course, having lived in Napa Valley for 25 years, and grown up in LA, and lived in SF for a couple of years after getting married). I think Big Sur is one of the 2 or 3 most beautiful places in the world - if you guys are camping types I might try to spend a night there. There is a really great Aquarium in Monterrey if you are into that. Alcatraz is one of the major tourist attractions in a big city that does not disappoint. And since it looks like you will not be going to Yosemite or Sequoia, you might want to check out Muir Woods. I have never taken a visitor on a walk across the Golden Gate Bridge who did not enjoy it.
SF of course is all about food, so I would research a couple of restaurants. Napa also has a number of really good places to eat, in addition to drinking. If you are in need of winery recommendations I would be happy to get a few from my wife, who used to work in the industry. September really is the hottest month of the year for San Francisco, so be prepared for that (though it can be cool and even wet, in other parts of California, especially up in the Valley).
