I think it's a question of how much people a given distance away feel they
can get away with.

My own intellectual property theft took place in college in the mid-1990s.
I'd come home for Christmas break and watched the KNBC local newscast, and
was impressed by a radically different opening title sequence and graphics
style. So as soon as I got back to college in Tacoma, WA I promptly shot a
new, nearly identical open for the college newscast and mimicked the
graphics look as best I could with a Commodore Amiga. Within a year every
Seattle affiliate had changed their graphics to match what I'd stolen from
LA, and people on campus were impressed with my vision.

I'd post a link to both NBC LA's opening and the one I did, but it looks
like I never uploaded mine onto my YouTube channel. Suffice it to say, yes
it's theft and yes it's wrong, but I don't think either Conan or his
propmaster have lost revenue as a result of it.
