I take what she says in her press release at face value; her thing is making fun of rich and powerful celebrities, and she sees herself as simultaneously celebrating and puncturing the excesses of pop culture. But she is uncomfortable with making fun of less powerful people, and of reinforcing stereotypes and narrow and perfectionistic standards of beauty. Because of Rivers, *Fashion Police* came across superficially as doing the former, but at least as often was really doing the latter. I think Griffen has figured out that the show really is at its base about normalizing pale white beauty that comes in a size 0 dress, and being snarky not about those who are too rich and full of themselves, but about anyone who can't pull off a European runway look. The question is rather, what took Griffen so long to figure this out? Rancic's comment was not all that bad, and her apology was pretty good and prompt, but the problem was that, as we now know, it was not an off-the cuff joke that fell flat, but a premeditated attempt at a "joke" that was written for her by the producers, and embodied the spirit and the focus of the show. -- -- TV or Not TV ....
