I forget who the comic was who made the observation during NYPD Blue's run that the most prominent Latino on television, Jimmy Smits, was playing an Italian.
I have a number of Asian-American friends who get annoyed at casting agents who believe someone from China can play someone from Japan or a Korean can play a Filipino, etc. And ever since living in a Russian-speaking country, the horrific stereotypical Russian accent slathered on by non-Russian actors is like sandpaper to me. There's no shortage of actors from all walks of life that for the industry to keep casting people who aren't what their characters are, or to make the characters intentionally non-specific as a cheap workaround, it is just insanity.
