It's probably my age and bias (I don't care for either 11:30 Jimmy) but I'm a
bit annoyed at press articles talking about the two Jimmys carrying on after
Dave, with little or no mention of Conan. Is it just that he's not on
broadcast (or Comedy Central)?
While Conan doesn't quite fit into the narrative of the 'new' late night
paradigm, he's not online-averse. Arguably an online presence sustained him
(along with the tour) while he couldn't be on TV, and TBS has a promotional
campaign highlighting Conan's Facebook likes and other online marks. His
remotes are still his most consistent feature, they just aren't as frequent (or
as short) as the viral stuff from the two cool kids.
I don't have the strong connections to Dave that others here have. Both he and
Johnny were my entree into the wider culture (Carson Comedy Classics hit
syndication not long after I first watched Late Night). I missed the morning
show and the first few years of Late Night. As I've gotten older I've been
much more appreciative of broadcaster Dave compared to wisecracking Dave. (I'd
be the guy who got tired of "Is It Anything?" and similar bits much, much
faster than Dave.) I'll simply co-sign with those who don't expect that
anybody else in late night will be able to serve in that role. Nor do I expect
anyone to do something as bizarre as airing a rerun dubbed in Spanish any time
soon.
