Well, it was done initially without Schwartz's participation by the Annoyance Theatre in Chicago, the creation of future "Transparent" creator Jill Soloway and her piano player sister Faith (with Jane Lynch as Carol, using the pseudo of "Greta Wesson" because she had an Equity card and the Annoyance was non-Equity, and Andy Richter in various roles). Schwartz eventually saw it and arranged for them to pay Paramount $1 a performance (something I don't see today, with CBS owning the series).
Back in the 90s, Schwartz and the same people did a musical version of "Gilligan's Island" (after Schwartz had purchased the stage rights from Turner) in some cities, including Chicago, with intent for Broadway. It was awful. Sounds like CBS is looking at the success of "I Love Lucy Live!" (a show that started in LA and presents recreations of two episodes built into a night at the Desilu Playhouse, with only character names used because the Ball, Arnaz, Vance and Frawley estates weren't even contacted for permission) and kicking themselves for only licensing "I Love Lucy" to those producers. I don't see them using one of the best gags of "The Real Live Brady Bunch," though--an actual laugh track on every scripted punchline.
