Margaret Juntwait was only the third host in the 84-year history of the Saturday afternoon institution of the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts (which have been self-syndicated by the Met for the last 50 years or so and airs today on mostly public radio stations in the U.S., as the number of commercial classical music stations dwindle)--she had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer long before she took the job in 2004 after many years with NPR station WNYC and died of the disease on June 3--the Met has yet to announce her replacement:
