The president of FX network has said basically this for years. When asked
if it is better to be 20th most popular thing of the majority of TV viewers
or the 1st most popular thing of a small percentage of TV viewers, always
opt for the small percentage, and they will reward you with loyalty and
respect. Dick Wolf has made successful TV shows in his lifetime, but I
don't think you'll find his viewers willing to follow him into hell. Dan
Harmon, Seth MacFarlane, Mitch Hurwitz, or Aaron Sorkin will probably never
score a show rated in the top five of the Nielsens, but their fans will
stand in line in 110 degree heat outside a convention center just for the
chance to pay $40 for an autograph of one of the supporting cast of one of
their programs.
