The end of part I was tremendous, because anything could have happened.
They had killed off Tasha Yar at the end of season 1, and changed doctors
for a year, so there was precedent for getting rid of characters/actors.
And I do remember they kept quiet about things that summer.

Unfortunately, Part II was over for all intents and purposes once we saw
the opening titles. The cast was back intact, so nobody was going to be
killed or reassigned or anything. And since we knew the Federation wasn't
going to be wiped out, it was just a matter of how they were going to
defeat the Borg.

It's interesting to see how the people inside the show think that was what
put the show over the top. From my vantage point on the couch, it seemed
like it took a couple years to get their footing, and then they had a nice
run of stories that involved intelligent and competent crew members
combining to solve problems, without relying on the captain's superior
intuition to save the day. By the last couple seasons, there were too many
unsatisfying stories that were designed to showcase individual actors, but
they had a terrific run for a while.
