The veteran character man did all sorts of other things, of course, but he pretty much got typed for life after landing the role of kindly patriarch Tom Bradford on "Eight is Enough"--he also did a lot of "Love Boat" and a lot of Mel Brooks movies (now there's versatility!) and was part of a showbiz family that includes as suevivors his acting sister Joyce, his wife Patti (once a singer), all three of his acting sons and half-brother Timothy (who seemingly directs some episodes of every HBO drama series):
