The law is a bit of a mess in the UK. It was always previously theoretically "illegal" to rip your own CDs in the UK. But in practice I nothing was done to stop it - it's not illegal to supply software that does it etc. (e.g. iTunes!). Then there was an attempt to modernise the laws and acknowledge that format shifting should be allowed. But it's this that has fallen foul in the High Court.
It's all a mess. And it'll make precisely zero difference to anyone. Sales are shifting to downloads and to streaming. And as someone who sometimes buys CDs and rips them, I will continue to do so.
