The veteran of 30+ years in NASCAR's 'Cup' series hardly reached the 
success level of those he was hoping to join this year in the sanction's 
Hall of Fame (including his father Buck), though Daytona in 1980 and '83 
was among his conquests, along with three Coke 600s in his hometown of 
Charlotte... afterward he was a lovable, knowledgeable analyst with TNN and 
CBS (including the Eye's last-known NASCAR event, a 2000 truck race in

spent his last years as a nighttime host at SiriusXM's NASCAR channel.
