Your second take is what I was trying to convey. In the first season of F Troop Wrangler Jane is crushing on Parmenter, and wants to marry him, but he is uncomfortable by her affection, though I think is supposed to be read as shy, not closeted. By the standards of the early 21st century, the age disparity (let's say 16 and 32) is disconcerting, (and illegal in some states). But by the standards of the late 19th century, the disparity was common and not illegal at all (the age of consent was 10 in some states in the 1890s).
