In grad school I worked as a supervisor at a soup kitchen and homeless shelter. One of my jobs was to sort through the boxes of donations we received, mostly clothing and books. One box contained a pile of magazines (almost all of this was donated by good church people) - hidden in between the Time and Newsweek issues was the famous Williams Penthouse - this was maybe six to 12 months after it was first published. Being a responsible do-gooding church employee I confiscated the issue, removing it from the Shelter's reading material. Mysteriously, it found its way into my own personal stack of used periodicals for a couple of months, until my girlfriend at the time, not knowing that I possessed it, gave me a scathing and persuasive feminist critique of the practice of publishing nude photographs without consent. The evil of that seems obvious now, but I was single and still in my early 20s and, well, really stupid.
At not time did I notice that Tracy Lords was in that issue, and aside from I think George Burns, I don't think I was interested in anything else in the magazine.
