I only got a couple of hours sleep last night; I live on the ragged edge of
the evacuation line for what has been titled the "Valley Fire" in Lake and
Napa county; around midnight the evacuation line moved to less than 1 mile
from my driveway, though that was precautionary in case the wind picked up
speed over night. We were up most of the night watching the Twitter feed in
case we were next, making priority lists and doing some preliminary
packing. Still on evacuation alert. We have very good friends in Lake
county who literally escaped with their lives and the clothes on their
back, racing that son-of-a-bitch which was at times less than a mile behind
them and actually running like the wind. It has been a little scary.

I write to inquire if this has been getting any coverage on the national
news. I have not been monitoring those sources. I got up at 6:30 after
falling asleep around 4:30, checked out local news and mostly internet
sites. I did watch a little CNN, but they did not mention it, and then went
to Zakaria (sp).

Lake County (where this fire is centered) is, I think, the poorest county
in California. Napa is higher profile, but the fire so far is not
threatening the touristy Valley (though I am sure it is plenty smoking down
there). There are some high priced vineyards down in Pope Valley and Lake
County, and some of the most premium grapes in the United States are up
here on the Mountain where I live, so that might get someone's attention.
California of course is dealing with a number of other big fires, including
one in Butte County about 130 miles from here, so I would guess there may
be some coverage of just the "California Fires" if not this particular
local "Valley Fire".

It kind of feels like this really horrible thing is happening to 75,000 of
my closest friends and neighbors and nobody else is noticing it, but that
may just be because we are stuck in the middle of it. I don't know that I
would be really critical if it was being ignored by the national news - we
are not a huge population center, and there is a lot going on in the world
right now. Just wondering.
