Wait - what? I have followed DA Grier's career for years, and never realized his father was Bill Grier. I read his classic "Black Rage" in high school, and studied it later in grad school. The Times Obit mentions that Bill Grier's book was criticized by African-American social psychologist Kenneth B. Clark as being simplistic. It does not mention that this is the Clark whose work (along with this wife) was cited by the Supreme Court in its landmark "Brown v Board of Education" decision. I agree with Clark's analysis - though the point is that Grier & Cobbs (a psychiatrist, not a psychologist) did not base their conclusions on anything like systematic empirical research. This means the conclusions can not be generalized, but it does not mean that it is worthless. Their work is more social commentary and critique than social science. -- -- TV or Not TV ....
