Agreed, but I think you are being too kind. The parallel is that one is at
NBC and the other at CBS, and that, 7 shows in, the NBC host has higher
ratings and the CBS host is more substantive. Is it possible columnist at
Variety really thinks that gets at the core of the Letterman-Leno rivalry?
If that was the major part of their rivalry there would not have been a
rivalry. Their dynamic was a function of their shared history as two of the
brightest stars in the hot Southern California stand-up scene, then
Letterman giving Leno a national television profile by having him as a
frequent guest on Late Night, then Leno getting the Tonight Show gig that
Dave long coveted and many thought was his, without talking to Dave about
it directly. The personal hatred between the two is often exaggerated, but
they do have a tense relationship, going back 40 years or more. Colbert and
Fallon have no shared history even close to anything as long, intertwined,
intense or conflicted. The history they do have is marked by collegiality
and goodwill, and Colbert has gone out of his way to avoid the edgy
fraternal competition that Dave in particular could almost never resist.
This column is a joke.

We are a ways yet from being able to really judge how Colbert is doing
ratings wise; If he can get pretty close to Dave's position vis a vis Leno
he will be more than successful for CBS (since I am sure he is making
significantly less).
