Kevin - it's interesting you say that, because there was a moment on last night's Colbert that proves that, as much fun as they're determined to make us believe they're having, there's clearly a more adult undertone.
Colbert was having a good natured, but still quite serious, discussion with Sen. Ted Cruz when the topic of same-sex marriage was raised. Cruz made a statement unpopular with the audience (something along the lines of his usual talking point that 5 lawyers in DC shouldn't be making law) and some in the audience started to boo. Colbert turned and said - with no sarcasm evident - “Guys, guys! However you feel, he’s my guest, so don’t boo him,” and let Cruz finish his point. Colbert was a gracious host, but wasn't afraid to challenge Cruz on his points, and showed due respect, even for someone with whom (I presume) he disagrees. (The same respect, I should add, that he showed by referring to VP Biden as "Sir" throughout his interview.) JEB! aside (and I'm chalking that one up to opening night jitters), his political interviews have found a middle-ground between political discussion and entertainment interview, something I don't find Super Sloppy Jimmy able or willing to do.
