Even if they are fabulous live (which, I have to say I doubt, unless they play in an entirely different style as soon as they cut to commercial), the point stands. If one's view is that the core of the show is very good (my view is that it is the best late night talk show currently running, not counting Oliver) then the band could be better than I think it is and still be the worst part of the show. And I second Dave's observation about Batiste as a comic partner; I too recalled Colbert's boast that he would be a great player, and have been monitoring his contribution closely.
