Honestly, I had completely forgotten about "The Sum of All Fears", so that should tell you about the impression it left on me.
I enjoyed "CaPD" more than "Patriot Games", but mostly for the supporting cast - particularly "Latin Jack Ryan", Ding Chavez and John Clark, and for a solid final performance by James Earl Jones as Adm. Greer. Like I said, I feel like constantly going back to Jack Ryan as the center of the Clancyverse is a mistake, because there are so many character that could be fleshed out (again, Ding & Clark come to mind). I'm not saying there's no place for Ryan in those stories - depending on the time period, he could be easily inserted as a CIA analyst, Deputy Director, etc. But to focus on him ignores a vast property that hasn't been explored.
