Back in the pioneering days of television, when networks hired bazillions of people for a (by today's standards) tiny amount of programing, they were able to fund it with far fewer commercials then versus now. The "I Spy" episode I watched today was 53 minutes long. The "Wild Wild West" binge-watch I did yesterday (all the Dr Loveless episodes from season 1) featured episodes between 50 and 52 minutes long. Granted they had product placement in those days, but no network bugs, no DVD or streaming revenue, no need to squeeze the credits into subatomic particles to make way for other stuff... yet they still made money back then.
