Having spent time in Middle America, there are many there who still look to
the coasts for what is "cool" (or whatever the modern slang term is). SNL
has always been a place to go for a quick glance at what is popular or
trending in America. As Lewis Black often says about Super Bowl Halftime
shows, if you find yourself waking up from a long coma and need to see
where America is at that moment, just watch.

I listened to the WTF episode as well. I wasn't as impressed with Michaels
as Steve was, though it was a decent interview. There were times that
Michaels was obviously humoring Maron as Maron strove for closure from his
botched SNL audition. And a couple times when he asked Lorne the usual
questions about the early days of SNL, Lorne's sighs were quite loud, and
eventually Marc even noted that he would try to focus on more original
topics. I suspect that had the interview been two solid hours instead of
two individual hour-long interviews over two days, Michaels would have lost
his cool. But in the end, Maron is an SNL fanboy who wanted to know what a
lot of fanboys want to know.
