John Searing was working as an art-supplies salesman in the NJ suburbs of
New York, and from his childhood, worshipped Johnny Carson.

In 1980 he first wrote to NBC hoping to do, even once, what Ed McMahon did
nightly, say those magic words.

It took him *hundreds* more letters, supposedly all civil, but he finally
got his wish <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJVYXdGa-WQ> ('toob) in 1986.

Susan Fleet, a biographer and true-crime novelist who is also an
accomplished concert trumpeter, blogged about Searing's saga (in the same
piece with the far-more-ill-fated Letterman pursuer Margaret Ray) earlier
this year

Searing passed away Monday night here in the Easton area. He was 65, and
although no apparent IMDb listings exist for him, his obituary
<http://obits.lehighvalleylive.com/obituaries/etpa/obituary.aspx?n=john-w-searing&pid=176845252>

(link) mentions how he went on to brief stints as a soap-opera actor and
game show host.

A good-looking guy, from the obit picture, and a lucky one.
