I don't even have a dog in the fight, since I have DirecTV (and don't subscribe 
to any premium channels anyway).

Supposedly, part of DirecTV's dispute with Viacom a couple years ago was over 
carriage of Epix, and that was settled without DirecTV picking up Epix. Of 
course, things may change now that AT&T is in charge there -- appearances are 
that they're trying to combine DirecTV's carriage contracts with U-verse's 
carriage contracts (but they've already had one obvious failure this year, when 
negotiations over carrying Pac-12 Networks on DirecTV broke down at the last 
minute).
