I see “near Burbank” came straight from the article, and while that may seem close enough to people in Washington, D.C., no one in southern California would describe the leak’s location that way. The leak is right by the Porter Ranch neighborhood of the city of Los Angeles, which is in the northwest corner of the San Fernando Valley, and Burbank is closer to the southeast corner. The article also doesn’t explain that people have been evacuated not due to the methane itself, but due to the chemicals that are added to give natural gas its distinctive odor, which can cause health problems from breathing the fumes in large amounts for a long period of time.
