Kazakhstan, where I served as a volunteer in the Peace Corps, responded to
an insult by Russian Dictator -- um -- I mean President Putin who claimed
Kazakhstan had no history.* They have produced an epic mini-series which
the Guardian has described as its own Game of Thrones but what I'd prefer
to call Game of Yurtas. It'll showcase how the nation was formed amidst the
clashes of, among others, the Mongolian Empire and the Ukrainians. I'm
hoping for an English subtitled version, but may have to suffice with a
Russian subtitled version since my grasp of the Kazakh language is sadly
limited to a handful of phrases. While this will undoubtedly be seen as a
waste of money by some, the production put thousands of people to work in a
nation where Putin has a stranglehold on businesses there and crippled the
economy.

* When I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in 2002, I trained in a village
adjacent to these beautiful green foothills. The Soviet Union spent decades
crushing all individuality of its "republics," so it was with some degree
of shock that the locals discovered those foothills were really ancient
burial sites, akin to pyramids. Their history was denied them by the soviet
regime for generations, and while anyone who knows Kazakhstan's corrupt
president knows his version of history might not be 100% accurate, I
applaud their collective efforts over the past year to reaffirm its own
sense of culture. The Kazakh people are some of the best people you could
ever hope to meet -- they are the sort of Muslims the world needs more of,
and their women... oh, their women.
