I don't have a good handle on how the debates shape elections, but I think the 
current crop of debates has shredded what little connection they had to 
candidates' policies.  If it wasn't all about entertainment in 2012, it 
certainly seems that way now.

But I stopped watching once the parties effectively forced out the League of 
Women Voters from handling debates back in the 1980s.
