Netflix has dropped an eight-part series, mostly comedy, where actors
plays several characters in a 40-minute episode.
The first features Lauren Lapkus and it's dazzling. It was funny, it
was artistically creative and Lapkus shines through. She plays a bimbo
singer taking a stab at being a reality star, a morose teenage boy, a
crackhead and several other characters. The only misfire for me was
the woman struggling to get her suitcase on the bus. It was so good by
the time it ended I was ready to watch again. Lapkus is hugely
talented and "The Characters" features that. Note: I'm a Lapkus fan
("Ho HO!).
Then I started watching the second episode. It was about a guy at a
party who urges someone to tell a story and keeps stepping on the
joke., It was like those painful Saturday Night Live sketches that
have no point and no end. Next up he played a clueless guy on a first
date., I switched to a third episode about a minute in, but found
nothing I liked there. So I haven't watched them all. Lapkus was
great, but I'm not loving anything else I see.
I will update this when I watch the others, but I recommend everyone
at least watch Lapkus.
