Fresh Air ran clips from two Shandling interviews on Friday and in one of them
he specifically notes Carson thanking McCawley and how that just never happens.

If you (re)watch Shandling's "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee", he mentions
that McCawley watched him do a set at The Comedy Store and said "You're funny
enough for the show. How about Tuesday?" So Jim was probably more enthusiastic
about Garry than most comics, and Johnny was telling him that he was right.
