I saw him live a couple of time - I doubt there are more than two other
artists who consistently gave a better live performance (and I don't know
who those might be).

I don't think his eccentricities were really about ego - he was an
idiosyncratic, very sensitive, very artistic person, who was most
comfortable under certain conditions, tried hard to maintain those
conditions, and found himself with the power and money to often get those
conditions.
