We all complain how shows contort plot to get a famous face in to some
fictional suburbia. It may make sense to the writers, but we throw up our
hands in disgust....

.until it happens to me.

This is the second weekend of the West Virginia International Film Festival.
I had finished the first half of my scheduled double feature ("45 Years"),
went out to the car to sip some more on my Pepsi, and went back in for the
6:00 showing of Michael Moore's documentary "Where To Invade Next".

While thumbing through my phone, I heard rumbles - which were proven true -
that Michael Moore was in the building.

It turns out that today is his birthday. As he stated in some pre-show
remarks, he had decided to start spending his birthday in places he's never
been - last year: Brussels; this year: West Virginia.

He was not previously aware of the film festival or that his film was being
shown. Instead, someone else in his traveling party (his sister and her
husband, and a production buddy) found out about the showing once in-state.
They did some sightseeing at the New River Gorge Bridge and then showed up,
buying their own tickets and popcorn. He stated that this was a bizarre
confluence of events that nobody would ever believe. He also noted that this
was his first viewing of the film in a theatre since its premiere, and it
would be his last before it heads to home distribution - though he amended
that; he'll also appear at tomorrow's 3pm showing.

After the film and some Q&A from the director, the crowd - some awaiting the
long-past-8:30 showing of "Grandma" - sang "Happy Birthday" to the new
62-year-old.
