I think the problem (if you can call it that) with TAR28 is that the finishes of many legs - particularly in the later stages of the race - were determined by a matter of minutes (or even moments), where in the past they've had more time to spend with tasks because the finishes were more staggered. The production has also tightened up certain elements of the show over the last few seasons (e.g. having Phil present at the Detour clue box to do the front end of the task reveal, rather than having the leading team arrive, find the clue, rip the clue, then cut away to Phil), so it may just be the cumulative effect of many small changes, compounded by how this race season played out.
I have to say, coming into this season, I was expecting the Internet-famous racers to be insufferable douchbags, and that didn't turn out to be the case.
