I set my expectations for a show airing for its first time and was neither
delightfully surprised nor disappointed. I don't detect any chemistry or
shared sensibility between Maya and Marty and that keeps the show from
building any energy. They might find a way to work off each other in
sketches, but if not then there will be Marty sketches (the kids' talent
show) and Maya sketches (Goodnight Moon) with nothing to bridge them.
Musical acts on a new variety show are tricky - it has to be somebody known
to the public but not provocative or marginalizing. I thought Miley Cyrus
did that as well as could be done.

The only thing that bothered me was that the audience was prepped like for
a late night talk show: lots of screaming, laughter, and applause and not
always at the right time. There were people screaming through Savion
Glover's tap dance and I found that distracting. Let him perform and show
appreciation afterward.
